Indiska turns 120 years!

This fall, we will celebrate Indiska's fantastic 120-year history and exciting future with lots of activities in store and online. Come along!
In 1901, Mathilda Hamilton traveled to India and brought home exotic furnishings for the first store located on Regeringsgatan in Stockholm. This was the start of Indiska's long history. Much has changed in 120 years, but there are still several parts of our business that remains the same.

Inspiration from other cultures and countries. Color and shape enliven our daily lives, combining Scandinavian design with inspiration from around the globe. Some of our design components, such as the traditional paisley, have been used in Indiskas patterns since the beginning.

The traditional craftsmanship of India. Since its start, Indiska's home furnishings have been characterized by traditional manufacturing methods and even today, Indiska offers block-printed tablecloths, curtains, and cushions according to the 1000-year-old technology.
In the early 12th century, several cities in India became trading centers for high-quality printed cotton garments. Rajasthan and Gujarat where block printing was common became a giant economic hub for trade. The technology was initially used mainly to print fabrics for royal costumes, sheets, and decorative wall hangings
Long-term and close relationships with suppliers. We take great responsibility and are humble for the social responsibility Indiska has. We place great demands on our suppliers in terms of the occurrence of child labor, wage dumping, and environmental issues and we want to maintain a close relationship to develop together with our suppliers.

Sustainability has always been an important part of Indiska's DNA. We are and we want to be a company with a solid sustainability strategy. Our ambition is to be at the forefront of the industry by actively influencing and contributing to a more responsible and sustainable society at all levels.

Female leadership and role models. Mathilda Hamilton was part of what is called the first wave of feminism. She was not only an India lover, but also a women’s right activist and missionary. Indiska is today owned and operated by Karin Lindahl, who with her inexhaustible energy and curiosity combines Indiska's values with today's conditions, trends, and technology.
